This contest is fueled by the following news: Laos (full name: Lao People's Democratic Republic) is a landlocked country in South East Asia with the capital Vientiane. It has a common border on the west with Thailand, and in the east with Vietnam, in the south with Cambodia and the Yunnan province of China in the north and with Myanmar in the northwest. As a state, Laos's existence originates to the 14th century when the country was called the Kingdom of Lan Xang or Land of a Million Elephants Geography: Laos has no sea on its borders (landlocked). The territory of Laos is covered with dense forests, the landscape consists of small hills and mountains, the highest being Phou Bia at an altitude of 2817m. The River Mekong flows along the border of Laos with Thailand and the Myanmar border with Vietnam divides the Annamite Chain. The tropical climate is characterized by dividing the year into two seasons summer, the rainy period of monsoons from May till November and winter, the dry period from December till April. Laos does not have large cities. The capital Vientiane has a population of no more than 200 000 inhabitants, other rather big cities are Louang prabang (50 000), Savannakhet (70 000) and Pakxe (90 000). Since 1993, the government identified 21% of land as National Biodiversity Conservation Areas (NBCA), which are to be developed into national parks. After completion of the program, these parks promise to be the most interesting and representative parks in South East Asia. The significant share of animals, including many elephants died during the American bombardments of Laos in the 1960s. The fauna of the Laos forests should be restored.
