When a lake literally vanished on Thursday, an entire Russian village was left baffled. Overnight, NTV television began broadcasting pictures of a giant muddy hole. Even nearby trees were drug underground as the lake that once covered the spot was sucked under the earth. Officials of the Emergencies Ministry in the Nizhegorodskaya region said water in the lake had been sucked into an underground water course or cave system. One local resident had a more sinister explanation. She said that the Americans were responsible for the vanishing lake.
I made this before looking at the other entries - but might as well put it in. It was poignant having to remove more than the obvious, from my old photo.

Last week, Japanese scientists explaced... placed explosive detonators at the bottom of Lake Loch Ness to blow Nessie out of the water. Sir Godfrey of the Nessie Alliance summoned the help of Scotland's local wizards to cast a protective spell over the lake and its local residents and all those who seek for the peaceful existence of our underwater ally.
