Contest Directions:  Labor Day is just around the corner. Even if some of us work on the upcoming Labor Day, we should still be thankful for our jobs... especially since The Labor Department said the jobless rate climbed to 9.7 percent in August, the highest since June 1983.
In this contest you are asked to create a satirical advertisement for any job (good, bad, or absolutely worst). Advertisement can be in any printed format - newspaper, magazine, billboard, or even a printed sheet of paper glued to a street pole. The job advertisement can include what normal job adverts include - job title, description, hours, pay, benefits, requirements, and contact information. Advertised job positions can be real, or made up, but your advert has to include a satire in it, and should be more than just text advert.

| | As it has been predicted, the crisis continues to develop and the number of people who are losing their jobs due to staff reduction is ever growing. The number of financiers and employees of developed companies have filled up with experts in marketing, PR managers and administrative staff. By far, it is not the complete list. How to search for a job during these difficult times?
Do not panic and be realistic.
Probably, people exist, who take the news of reduction with gladness and relief. But if you are not one of those and dismissal brings stress, do not rush at once in search of a job but instead take a small time-out. “It is necessary to see-off the troubles” – says popular wisdom and American psychologists advise to take at least three days off for overcoming the emotional feelings. During this period, you will choke-up with emotions and when the anxiety subsides, you will cool down and think of what to do further.
Each person perceives losing a job in his own way and it is not possible to give common advice. The only thing that can be said is do not lose hope, lock oneself up at home and regret. Use this time for realization of those plans for which you did not have enough time earlier: engage yourself, meet friends and pay visits to relatives. Look at this situation as a certain stage in life and be realistic while searching for a job. Earlier, deserving specialists were confident that they will be welcomed everywhere with an open embrace, now the situation has changed. It is necessary to know, on one hand, one’s worth and on the other hand to keep a track of the situation in the market and accordingly mend your ambitions.
Search for possibilities
Neil McNulty, owner of the recruiting company “McNulty Management Group” confirms: “The game has changed, but the rules remain the same: today the competitor should search not for vacancies but for possibilities. Possibilities, which are born out of crisis and chaos, can survive even in the worst economic situations”.
As of now, the situation is far from being hopeless. According to the opinion of the Executive Director of a “Private Consulting Group”, the companies are now divided into two big camps: one camp is reducing the staff and the other camp is hiring the outstanding specialists at a much lower package and consider themselves lucky. “A crisis is a chance to gain a new experience, to expand your horizons”, says the director and cites an example about one of his clients, an experienced PR-expert, who lost their job due to the crisis but in three weeks found a new job in a new department and nearly on the same salary package. And both the parties were gainers: the company hired a high-class expert, which the company could not afford before crisis and the person not only found a job very soon but also had an opportunity to gain new experience.
The administrative personnel selection group head of company “AVANTA Personnel”, advices those who have lost a job owing to the crisis, especially highly specialized professionals, “first assess your experience and try to understand in which other spheres is it possible to use the experience and knowledge. Secondly, consider all the offers without refusing to attend the interviews even in not so popular companies. Carefully collect the information about all the employers, especially about the potential stability of the companies. And third, lower the expectations on the salary package”.
Use all the resources:
On the whole, the job searching process during a crisis remains all the same: “polish” the resume, honing the interview and activate all links. Activating the links is especially important. Do not rely on the Internet and recruiters. All the companies always have vacancies, which are not displayed. More often, a suitable job can be found using links states Joe Turner, a recruiter with 15 yrs of experience.
The reason behind your dismissal should not daunt you; after all, your skills and professionalism remain with you. “If you have been dismissed due to the crisis, then there is nothing to be ashamed of. You as a specialist were not dismissed but the designation of work was reduced. The only thing that I would not say in an interview is about the incorrect behavior of a former employer while reducing the staff and though such a thing happens very often, it is better to avoid negative comments”. If you wish to be secure, collect recommendations from former employers and partners. “If only you are dismissed, then it is necessary to have enough legal information about the procedure during staff reduction and monitor the fulfillment of all the obligations by the employer. Also, contact the personnel department of your company, there may be a person who can recommend you to partner organizations or recruiting agencies with whom they collaborate”.
