| | Tattoos and body piercing is taking a backseat to what is proving to be the latest fashion trend in the Netherlands: eyeball jewelry. Believe it or not, there are now Dutch eye surgeons who are implanting tiny pieces of jewelry into people's eyes. The so-called Jewel Eye has been implanted in the mucous membrane of the eyes of one man and six women thus far. The surgeries are taking place at an institute in Rotterdam. a 3.5 mm piece of jewelry is put into the mucous membrane -- in the designs of a half-moon or of a heart. Local anesthetic is utilized. The procedure costs in the neighborhoods of $600 to $1,200 -- not particularly expensive when one considers what is involved. The institute that is doing these surgeries maintains that there is a waiting list for these procedures. |
