Contest Directions: 
[ Four inmates in an Italian women's prison near Milan used their jail time to create their own fashion line inspired by stripy prison design. About 50 creations were modeled on a Milan catwalk this week. ]
Let us take a wild guess why some of the most famous fashion designers are Italians. They all served sentences, had too much time on their hands and made their fashion lines behind the bars.
See, that's the difference between Americans and Italians - in the US you go to jail to serve time, in Italy you go to jail to become a fashion designer. They have a never ending supply of future designers on every street corner. The next time you are in Italy and get mugged, ask the mugger for his autograph. And those of you who wear Armani, Gucci, Versace, or Valentino, know there's always an extra pocket for a knife, even if we're talking about underwear.
In this contest you are asked to photoshop clothes inspired by classic stripy prison design, or by modern prison clothes design. We aren't asking you to paste a person wearing a prison uniform into another image here. We are asking you to re-design clothing using the prison motif.

| | Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. In this case, there are a group of four inmates in the women's prison at Vercellin near Milan, Italy, that have turned themselves into fashion designers. They have created a line of garments that are inspired by post World War II jail uniforms. Their clothes line consists of such items as loose trousers, mini skirts, T-shirts and sweatshirts that are reversible. The fashion clothing are all done in neutral colors that traditionally are found in prison settings including khaki, cream and gray. Many of the sweatshirts have a strip design on one side and a simply single color on the reverse side. Approximately fifty different items from the prison line were modeled on a catwalk in Milan just this week. The clothing does feature many of the aspects common in prison clothing like plastic zippers. The clothing is made from practical non crease cotton or other types of material that can be ironed out easily and fast. The concept behind the clothing line -- which is now distributed at 13 outlets in Italy -- is that clothing worn by inmates is not all that different from what people in the outside world actually favor. |
