Contest Directions: May 23 is World Turtle Day. Established by American Tortoise Rescue in 2000, World Turtle Day is aimed at bringing world's attention to turtles, and helping them survive and thrive. American Tortoise Rescue encourages people to dress up as turtles on World Turtle Day and to save turtles caught on highways.
Show how the world would be different if turtles ruled, merge turtles with other animals or people, including turtles in paintings, etc. We will allow any type of turtles, even the human-created ones from cartoons and movies (like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).

        • Very good work...to me,it's a wee bit too dark! If it was lighter and a little cleaner, I feel you would have placed a little bit better! But, that's only my opinion! Well done!
        • nepaguy59,
          I agree with your comments!
Base source was a little bit lighter, for example, I can see more of MS Block's neck in original source.
Tortoise upraised head needs some sharpening or less blur.
Pet turtle, embraced, needs more definition.

Flattened image and converted to LAB, Gaussian Blur on a and b channels, probably too much, re-set to RGB JPG before submitting.

        • Hello to: ericnorthend, Gummy, rajehstar
Thanks for taking the time for commenting on this chop.

I now see room for bettering chop.
Some black fringing on turtle's top end. 'specially left side of shell and head.
Also try some sharpening on turtle?
Used too much Gaussian Blur on chop in LAB in a, b channels before reverting to RGB?
          Don't know!

Used FotoSketcher version 2.30 on Turtle and Earth.
Do not know what settings I ended up with.
Then needed to do another cut-out of backgound and various blurring and smooshing.
Tried first JPG and then PNG files, but still got white/black backgrounds in saved FotoSketcher work.
          Gotta 'speriment more with FotoSketcher.
Great thanks to Rain's posting (under "Communities, Photoshop Techniques") on heads-up on to upgrade to newer release.
Had Foto Sketcher version 1.81 (from January 2009) that I had used on previous chop.
Interface on 2.30 better than 1.81.
          Don't have no Topaz, etc.

This contest is fueled by the following news: How long do turtles live? Turtles come from the most ancient kind of terrestrial reptiles – cotylosaurses. During the course of the evolution many of them managed to adjust to the conditions of life in the sea and in fresh waters. All kinds of turtles (there are 290 of them known to humanity, seven of which are common for our country) are incredibly hardy and tenacious. They recover from traumas very quickly, can last without food for a long time and are extremely resistant to various infections. Turtle Marion is a record-holder among long-livers. Documented age of one of the individuals is 153 years. Scientists suggest that turtles can live up to 200-300 years under favourable habitat conditions. According to The Cyber Security journal, a group of Chinese scientists have discovered the remains of turtles that are above the age of the oldest known species of turtles. The scientists found remains of three small – 20 to 40 cm – turtles in Southeast Guizhou Province. The creatures were fully protected by a shell. This was the most primitive turtle that lived about 220 million years ago, ever discovered. It was named Odontochelys. Scientists believe that this turtle was the starting point in development of turtles as a species. Previously the class of turtles' ancestors called Proganochely was considered the oldest, representatives of this species lived 210 million years and were completely covered by two shells. This new discovery finally gave the opportunity to learn more about the development of turtle body and shell. Up until now, it has been one of the biggest mysteries in the evolution of reptiles. The study showed that originally turtles had only the lower part of their shell, the upper one started to form when the development the lower part was finished. In addition, they had teeth instead of current bony plates and they were carnivores. However, scientists are concerned not only about the past of the turtles, but also about their future. At the beginning of this year hundreds of vanishing olive ridley sea turtles were found dead on the seashore of Gahiramatha reserve in the Indian state of Orissa. within one and a half months. There are different turtle protection programs that very often do not get implemented. Since 2000, people around the globe have celebrated World Turtle Day each May 23, by sending funny turtle-themed postcards to their friends and organising actions to support turtles and even by dressing up as turtles, which is especially loved by children. A team of scientists from Yale University (the USA) came to conclusion that the gigantic turtles from Galápagos Islands (Ecuador) which were presumed extinct may still exist. According to BBC News the results of the research have been published in Current Biology. Giant tortoises (Chelonoidis elephantopus) lived on Floreana island but were gradually eradicated by hunters, whalers in particular. Scientists have discovered hybrid kinds of turtles on Isabella Island. It is suggested that Chelonoidis elephantopus turtles were their ancestors. Some of the hybrids are less than 15 years old, therefore their parents are most likely to be still extant. Different kinds of giant turtles on Galápagos Islands allowed Charles Darwin to develop his evolution theory. It is assumed that the animals ca first me to the islands from South America. It is thought that the turtles first came to the islands from South America. Due to their isolation on each island the animals managed to develop distinctive features, specific for each colony on different islands. The distinctive feature of Chelonoidis elephantopus is the shape of their shell – turtles from Floreana Island had a saddle-shaped carapace, whereas turtles from other islands had a round-shaped shell. Three years ago scientists discovered hybrid types of turtles around the Volcan Wolf volcano in the north of Isabela Island. The scientists suggested that with the help of crossbreeding they can recreate the extinct type of turtles, however the process might take a long time. However, the scientists now came to the conclusion that there is no need for this process. 84 turtles whose parents were first generation С. elephantopus were found during the last expedition around the volcano. The genetic diversity of these individuals is estimated to have required 38 parents, many of which could still be alive on Isabela island. Possibly, the turtles could have moved to the North of Isabela Island from Floreana Island on whaling ships. The fact of the matter is that for a long time these turtles have been a sort of "living cans" on ships, living on holds for months without any food or water. One can think that such big turtles that weigh almost 500kg are easy to find. But in Dr. Caccone's opinion, the real situation is slightly different. According to his words, it is very difficult to see turtle shells in thick vegetation of Wolf volcano without certain skill. At the moment a team of scientists from Yale University is planning to discuss future actions with the authorities of Galápagos Islands – going on new expeditions or promoting the plan of breeding turtles. It is worth reminding that in 2007 the National Park on Galápagos Islands was included by UNESCO into the list of objects in danger. This was encouraged by the increased number of tourists, visiting the nature reserve.
