If Google Ruled
Contest Directions: Internet giant Google celebrated its 14th birthday today. Born as a shy startup in a garage, Google has grown into the king of Silicon Valley, and an absolute darling of the Internet. Google is rapidly evolving into areas beyond search. It introduced its own browser Chrome, and its android phone. Now it's competing with Apple's iPad by introducing Nexus 7 tablet. We love Google and we use it daily.
Photoshop what life would be like if Google ruled the world. Some examples are: showing how companies and products would look if they were owned by Google (or merged with it), designing a new logo for Google, etc.

This contest is fueled by the following news: Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) is an American transnational public corporation, investing in Internet search, cloud computing and advertisement technologies. Google supports and develops a series of Internet services and products and receives profit, mainly from advertisements through its AdWords program. The company was formed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. In the beginning, it was registered as private company on September 4, 1998 and since August 19, 2004, it started selling its shares in the stock market. At that time, Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt agreed on the joint functioning of Google for the next 20 yrs, up to 2024. The mission of the company, since the beginning, was to "organize global information, ensure its accessibility and benefit for all" and the unofficial slogan of the company, devised by Paul Buchheit, an engineer in Google: "Don't do evil". In 2003, the company moved to its present headquarters in Mountain View, California. Google manages more than a million servers in data processing centers around the world and handles more than one billion search queries and twenty four petabytes of user data every day. The rapid growth of Google from the time of its inception lead to the appearance of more products, not directly related to the main product of the company the search engine. Google has online products such as Gmail, which is a email service, and the social tools Google + and Google Buzz. The company also has desktop products such as the browser "Google Chrome", Picasa, the program for working with photographs and Google Talk, an instant messaging program. Also, Google carries out development of the mobile operating system Android, which is used on a majority of smartphones and also is the operating system of "Google Chrome OS", which is still under the development stage. According to Alexa, the main site of Google - Google.com is the most visited Internet site and numerous international Google sites (Google.co.in, Google.co.uk etc) fall under the first hundred most visited sites and also several other sites owned by Google - YouTube, Blogger and Orkut. In May 2011, for the first time, Google visitors exceeded 1 billion in a month. According to BrandZ version, Google is the most powerful brand in the world and according to Brand-Finance, Google is the most expensive brand in the world in 2011. In 2011, Google was acknowledged as the company with the best reputation in the USA, leaving behind Microsoft, Sony and other companies. Dthe dominating position of Google services in the market lead to criticism of the company on issues, related to privacy, an author's rights and censorship. Google History: Google was founded in March 1996 as the scientific project of Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Ph.Ds, and students at Stanford worked over Stanford Digital Library Project. SDLP was the aim of the "Development of the perspective technologies for a single, integrated and universal digital library" and was financed by the National Science Foundation apart from other Federal agencies. In search of a thesis topic, Page studied, amongst others the study of the mathematical properties of the world wide web, presenting the structure of references in the form of a huge graph. His research supervisor, Terry Winograd, recommended him to select this idea (which Page later on recollected as the "best advice I ever got") and Page concentrated on the issue of ascertaining which web pages refer to a given page, by studying the number and nature of such back references from the point of view of valuable information on the page ( according to the analogy with citation role in scientific publications). Sergey Brin, a fellow Ph.D of Stanford, supported by National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship, joined the project of Page, which was called "BackRub". Brin was already a close associate of Page, with whom he met for the first time in the1995 summer in the group of first year students and Brin voluntarily agreed to show them the university campus. The search engine started indexing Internet pages in March 1996, setup from the home page of Page in Stanford. Brin and Page developed the PageRank algorithm for converting the collected data into a degree of relevance of given web page. After analyzing the BackRub results, which consisted of URL lists, ranked according to the number of back references given a URL, they understood that the search system, based on PageRank, gives the best results than the existing search algorithms (search systems, existing at that time, assessed the pages according to the number of times the search word was found on the page). The small search system "RankDex" from IDD Information Services (associate organization of Doy Jones), developed by Robin Li, in 1996, already studied a similar page ranking strategy and its rating. RankDex technology was patented and used later, when Li founded Baidu in China. Being convinced that the pages with a maximum number of references on them from other pages with high rating should be more relevant during search, Page and Brin attempted their thesis within the scope of research and laid the foundation for their search. By the beginning of 1997, the description page of BackRub was mentioned. BackRub was written on Java and Python and released on the servers Sun Ultra and Intel Pentium, working on Linux. The main database is stored on the Sun ultra II with a 28GB hard drive. Scott Hassan and Alan Steremberg provided talented assistance. Sergey Brin also took active participation and deserves huge appreciation.
