July 20 is the International Day of Chess. It was on July 20, 1924 that the World Chess Federation (Federation internationale des Echecs) or FIDE was founded in Paris. Fide announced in 1966 that July 20 would be celebrated as the International Chess Day. Chess is commonly believed to have originated in northwest India during the Gupta empire, where its early form in the 6th century was known as "caturaṅga" (four divisions of the military – infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariotry, represented by the pieces that would evolve into the modern pawn, knight, bishop, and rook, respectively).
