| Experts maintain that many taxpayers are becoming more comfortable with the concept of cheating on their taxes. As a result, the Internal Revenue Service is hiring more enforcement personnel and will be conducting more audits. IRS Commissioner made this announcement after a survey was released that found that 17% of taxpayers felt it was okay to cheat on their taxes. This is up from 11% in 1999. The gap between what taxpayers owe and what the IRS actually has been able to collect has grown to $250 billion annually. The IRS plans to hire 5,000 more auditors, investigators and tax collectors during the coming year. |
