| This contest is fueled by the following news: |
| The IRS owes over 1.7 million Americans over $2 billion. This represents the money due to people who did not file tax returns in 2002 and are entitled to refunds. Half of these people could receive checks in the amount of more than $570. In order to obtain the funds, these taxpayers need to file a tax return before the 2006 April 17th filing deadline. The IRS is encouraging people to check their records to determine if they might be due some of this money. IRS Commissioner Mark Everson maintains that the agency wants people to get the money that they are entitled to in the form of refunds. The IRS gives people three years to claim a refund. After that period of time, the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury. |
