In the movie, Ron Perlman stars as the main superhero, the title character. In this regard, HellBoy is the red skinned son of Satan himself -- who also has a sense of humor. HellBoy actually was raised as a force for good. In other words, the powers that he obtained by being Satan's son are used for good. The movie alternatively is humorous and horrifying.
