This contest is fueled by the following news:
The color green is one of the three primary colors, of the green band spectrum with a wave length of 500—565 nm. In nature: The color of green plants is the natural standard of green for the human being. It is widespread in wildlife. The majority of plants have a green color, since they contain the photosynthesis pigment - chlorophyll (chlorophyll absorbs a huge share of red rays from the solar spectrum, leaving the reflected and filtered green color perceived). * A green ray in an optical phenomenon in the atmosphere. Minerals: Minerals, having a green coloring are rather rare. Most often, their color is connected with mixtures of chromophores: chromium (III), iron (II), nickel (II), copper (II) and some others. Amongst green minerals, it is possible to note emerald a variety of beryl painted by chrome, olive-green olivine – jeweller’s olivine, malachite, chrome-diopside, green garnet uvarovite, dioptaz. Blue-green potash feldspar is called amazon-stone. The names of the shades of green: * Turquoise; * Aquamarine; * Emerald green; * Olive green; * Pistachio green The green color in culture, art and ethnography: * Green is the color of Islam; * Green is the color of the Esperantist movement. * Professionals that are un-trained persons, beginners (in sense - young and inexperienced) are called “Green”; * Ecological movements are called “Green”, it is particularly the name of the environmental organization “Greenpeace”, and if translated from English it means “Green world”; * Dark blue and green are not differentiated (if required, are used in multiple color designating words) in many languages of the world (especially in Altaic, which also consists, in particular, Turkic). In the Japanese language, the word 青い (Green) means any shade of green, to which even dark blue is associated. In the Chinese language, hieroglyph (spelt “cyn”) designates both dark blue as well as green colors. It is linked with the etymology of symbols, initially designating the color of minerals extracted from the earth. Compare azurlite with malachite; * The green color is considered a color of life. First of all, it is connected with the prevailing color of plants (the presence of the pigment “chlorophyll”). This generality of color is caused by a certain general element in the genetic code of terrestrial plants, connected with the universal mechanism of the absorption of sunlight during photosynthesis. In vexillology: * The green color on the national flag of Mozambique is a symbol of soil fertility ; * The green color on the flag of Libya is the color of Islam. The flag is the only unique single-color national flag in the world. Psychology of the green color perception: The human eye is the most susceptible in the red-yellow section of the spectrum; the green color (the color of grass, plants) soothes the nervous system. Our eyes rest during the perception of green color shades, therefore, walls of public institutions are quite often painted in green shades (schools, hospitals, etc.). Particularly for this reason, tables with a green cloth (material with diffusive reflection) are traditionally widespread (library tables, billiards and card tables). Other literary-cultural associations: * Green mile; * Green is considered the color of air (dark blue - water, red - fire) * The image of green grass in the song “Grass in the house” by the Soviet group “Earthmen”. * Melancholy green is the depressive state of a human being; * “Monster with Green Eyes” - jealousy (Shakespeare, “Othello, Venetian moor”, P. I. Veinberg's translation (1864)); * The screen version of Harry Harrison’s novel “Make Room! Make Room!” with the name “Soylent Green” appeared in 1973.
