| Researchers now suggest that the massive ice sheet that makes up much of Greenland may begin to melt this century. The entire sheet may disappear all together in the next thousand years because of global warming. A new client change study suggests that the melting of the Greenland ice sheet potentially would raise ocean levels by 23 feet. Many global cities would end up submerged under water -- including Los Angeles, New York and London (to name only a few). A partial melting of the Greenland ice sheet would also have terrible consequences for low lying countries -- including places like the Maldives and Bangladesh. In the last century, the global surface temperature increased 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit. Oceans have become warmer as well during this same period of time. As a result, sea levels rose 4 to 8 inches during this period of time, during the last 100 years. |
