Bush challenged Democrats to join him in lessening the nation's dependence on oil and pleaded with them and the American people to give him time to work his controversial plan to raise troop levels in Iraq. Eleven weeks after conceding his Republican Party took a "thumpin"' from voters, Bush tried to position himself as the conciliator in chief - but only up to a point. Democrats, who won control of Congress in November elections, already have served notice that they will fight his proposals on Iraq, health care reform and other issues. |
