| The leading food safety agency in Europe has given a clean bill of health that allows for the planting of genetically modified maize. This is only the first step towards the possibility of the EU giving approval for growing the crop. The EU has lifted a ban that has been in place so six years and that prohibited the imports of new GMOs into the EU. The EU's 25 member governments are sharply divided on this issue. A mere handful of GMO crops have been authorized for growing since before the moratorium began in 1998. No new crop of this type has been approved for growing since that date. Spain remains the only country in the EU that grows genetically altered crops on a commercial scale ... although the fields exist somewhere else. |
