Gender reassignment surgery or more recently sex change surgery is considered as single method, acknowledged by medicine, for treating gender dysphoria in case of transsexuality.
Gender reassignment surgery can be done in two choices: FtM (Female to Male), i.e reconstructing the female gender into male & MtF (Male to Female) — from male to female. Second choice is more widespread.
It is scientifically correct not to say “Gender replacement” but “Gender reassignment surgery” since many genders exist (Psychological, physical, genital, chromosome, passport...) & the specified operations meant to rectify the disharmony between physical and psychic genders in transsexuals. In many countries, changing of documents for transsexuals is possible only after surgical reassignment. However, for example, obstetric or chromosome genders of human being is not possible to change and hence reassignment surgery cannot completely change the gender.

Gender reassignment consists of confirmation of diagnosis, long hormonal treatment and surgical reconstruction of genitals (and, if wished, cosmetic surgery of face and body) and change of legal documents. Entire reassignment process can take from a year to many years.
With the confirmation of “Transsexuality” diagnosis and after surgical operation, transsexual has the right to obtain legal documents with new name and gender. Such change is even registered in passport issuing authority near permanent residence.
After gender reassignment, adaptation in society is needed. As a rule, person is already made ready to new life thanks to the prior preparation, disguise trials and behavior like target gender. Hormonal therapy remains for the entire remaining life so as to support the balance of hormones in the organism and avoid the risk of occurrence of cancerous growth.
Entire procedure is to be born from own funds by transsexual. Contrary to prevalent opinion, surgical operation consumes a small portion of total expenditure. Major portion of the expenditure is spent on paid visits to doctors, payment towards clinics after the operation and purchase of expensive hormone drugs.
In United States and Europe, surgical operations can be done in several centralized clinics and observation and diagnosis–at many specialized. Operations and observation can be done in other countries.
