This contest is fueled by the following news: The price of gasoline rose by more than 7 percent in January, which normally is one of the slowest motoring months of the year. Experts now predict a price surge at the pumps later in the year as more people take to the roadways. The average price of unleaded gasoline jumped from $1.78 at the start of the current year to $1.91 during the week that ended on January 31st. The price is over 30 cents higher than pump prices last year. Gas prices were highest on the West Coast at an average of $1.99 per gallon and lowest in the Rocky Mountain region at about $1.83 per gallon.
