| | Nice and Cannes on the French Riviera have imposed curfews on minors. Although the cities are best known for glamour and film festivals, the curfew were imposed as rioting broke out previously in different places in France. The government has taken a firm stand in response to what it describes the worst case of civil unrest since student riots in 1968. Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy advised that local officials have been told to deport some 120 foreigners convicted so far of playing roles in the violence and unrest gripping the nation. Even though rioting did persist in some places in France for the 14th straight night, car burnings and other reports of violence dropped off. Despite these drops, looters and vandals continued to defy a state of emergency imposed by the French government Tuesday by attacking superstores in northern France and a newspaper warehouse as well as subway station in the south of France. |
