Contest Directions: Henry Ford once said his dream was to create a car that every American
family can afford. Nonetheless, Americans are buying more Toyotas than
Fords and Ford is suffering losses bigger than expected. Ford
strategic advisors are now on the cost-cutting quest to save leading
American car manufacturer from bankruptcy. In this contest you are
asked help Ford by showing how they can cut costs by producing new cars with some
parts being really cheap - e.g. rusted doors from older cars models,
parts from cars being in car accidents, tires from old cars being
different size, saloon seats made of wood, flashlights instead of
front lights, etc. The key is to change only part(s) (not the whole car) of
otherwise new good Ford car, and that part(s) have to be really cheap
- either parts from older cars, or made from some cheap materials. Try
to use photos of brand new "shiny" Ford cars, so that the difference
with the changed parts is obvious.

The crisis situation at Ford grew worse on Wednesday when the company announced that its second quarter loss would be more than double what had previously been reported. The company further announced that its luxury car unit would not post a profit this year. The announcement came as a surprise and was made after the stock market had closed for the day. The company did announce that it had hired Kenneth Leet, formerly of Goldman Sachs, to provide advise to Ford CEO Bill Ford. He will provide Mr. Ford advice on strategic issues. Mr. Ford is the first family member to hold the reigns as Ford CEO in many years. Some analysts predict that Ford might well end up selling non-core assets, including its Jaguar division and its financing business in an attempt to boost slumping sales and to better its overall bottom line. Ford has suffered from a myriad of problems in recent times including high healthcare costs, a slump in sales and market shares, the rising cost of gasoline and a focus on vehicles that are seen as gas guzzlers. In a further difficult development, this week Ford lost its place ranking as the second largest auto manufacturer in the United States to Toyota. The company's luxury car unit which includes Land Rover, Volvo, Jaguar, and Aston Martin is expected to be a high priority for Leet at Ford. |
