| | One might wonder how a flower knows when to ... bloom. For one thing, it really isn't just April showers that make flowers blossom. Scientists have long understood that the amount of sunshine makes a different as to when a plant does bloom. They have also now learned that leaves play a role in signaling a plant to blossom. In a series of research papers, German, British, Swedish and Japanese researchers have learned that a gene called FT that is present in the leaves of plants is crucial to the process of flowering. Questions remain on how the message actually is delivered from the leaves to the flowers. The study will be published in the upcoming issue of Science. |
