| A flag is a piece of cloth of the correct geometrical (as a rule, rectangular) shape, which can be hoisted on a special mast (flagstaff). The study of flags is known as vexillology.
The national flag is one of the states symbols. Apart from the national flag, many states have naval and trading (commercial) flags.
Russia has the St.Andrew’s flag, while at the same time as in some countries, for example in the USA, for all three forces - the naval flag, the trading flag (flag of the courts of the civil fleet) and the national flag – the one and the same flag is used.
Not only the states have their flags but even the separate regions and cities have their own flags; and also international organizations (for example, United Nations flag), commercial companies, national movements and diasporas (National flag) and social movements (e.g., flag of pacifists).
Also, signaling flags are used on fleets for communicating between the ships.
