| | Fishing is the catching of river and sea fishes. Fish are the object of fishing in the narrow sense of this word. In a broad sense, the trading of aquatic animals in general belongs to fishing.
In industrial purposes, fishing is done for using the fish in food and also for making cod-liver oil.
History:
Fishery is one of the most ancient forms of the economic activities of people. It is traced back to the times of the upper paleolith. For many tribes, fishing became the basic source of existence (for example, in some tribes of the northwest part of North America). Fishery was usually combined with collection, hunting and agriculture. Fishing did not play a significant role for cattle breeding tribes. The forms and methods of traditional fishing and likewise its tools, were rather varied and represented almost all known and complete, until now, methods of non-industrial fishing: traps, nets, baskets, fishing rods etc. With the initiation of the exchange and trading in many people, fishing slowly takes the form of a business and recently, it acquired an industrial nature.

From the commercial point of view, it is possible to divide fish into: sea, living always in the sea; migratory, spending part of life (much) in the sea and part of life in the rivers, from where they get into fresh water for spawning; and fresh-water fish, living constantly in rivers, lakes, etc.
Moreover, commercial fish are divided into red and ordinary fish. Sturgeons and sometimes salmon with white salmon (tariff classification) belong to the red fish category. Fishes of all other breeds (on Volga, white – on Don, black — in Ural) fall under the category of ordinary fishes. The most important commercial fishes belong to the family Sardines (Clupeidae) and the Cod (Gadidae). Fishes from families of carp (Cyrpinoidae), salmon (Salmonidae) and sturgeon (Acipenseridae) are less important but nevertheless have a rather big commercial value, especially in Russia.
Amateur fishing, performed by one or several fishers, is usually called fishing. There is a kind which has become a “Fishing sport” which emerged from fishing.
