It is considered that, the idea to celebrate Father's day was started in 1909 by Mrs. Dodd of Washington. She wanted to express gratitude to her Father and in the name of all caring Fathers of America, who are upbringing the children. The father's name of the founder was William Smart and his wife died after giving birth to her sixth child. Nevertheless, he single handedly took care of the newborn baby and the remaining five children. Kind hearted William was a veteran of the civil war and lived with the children on a farm.
For the first time, Father's Day was popularly celebrated on the 19th of June, 1910 in Washington and since then many families in America started celebrating Father's Day. However, all America started celebrating Father’s Day from 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson declared the third Sunday of June as the National Holiday. According to traditions, during annual festivals, Government and local citizens hurry up to render support to Fathers with a low income, who single-handedly raise children.
In Finland, Father's Day has been celebrated for more than 50 years. Father’s Day celebrations reached Finland from the United States of America. On this day, flags are hoisted and children in schools and kindergartens, with their own hands, prepare gifts for their fathers. In houses, Mothers, along with children, prepare a festive lunch and bake cakes or pies. People congratulate the grandfathers. Fathers and grandfathers, who are not alive, are remembered on this day and candles are lit on graves.
In Estonia, Father's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of November from 1992. On the eve of Father’s Day, thematic performances are performed in kindergartens and in schools – concerts for fathers. Children present self-made greetings and gifts (usually these are cut-out from paper and colored ties) to their fathers. Flags are hoisted on Father’s Day.
As of now, for many countries, Father's Day is officially a new celebration but gradually, the day is becoming common across the nations and is acquiring its traditions. This Sunday is the second most celebrated holiday in the USA next to Mother's Day. Father's Day is one day we have set aside to honor our father. Let's face it, we would really be nowhere without him.
