It is considered that, the idea to celebrate Father’s day was started in 1909 by Mrs. Dodd of Washington. She wanted to express gratitude to her Father and in the name of all caring Fathers of America, who are upbringing the children. Father’s name of the founder was William Smart and his wife died after giving birth to sixth child. Nevertheless, he single handedly took care of the newborn baby and the remaining five children. Kind hearted Williams was a veteran of civil war and lived with children in a farm.
For the first time, Father’s Day was popularly celebrated on 19.June.1910 in Washington and since then many families in America started celebrating the Father’s Day. However, entire America started celebrating the Father’s Day from 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson declared the third Sunday of June as National Holiday. According to the traditions, during annual festivals, Government and local citizens hurry up to render support to Fathers with low income, who single-handedly rare the children.
In Finland, Father’s Day is celebrated for more than 50 years. Father’s Day celebrations reached Finland from United States of America. On this day, flags are hoisted and children in schools and kindergartens, with their own hands, prepare gifts for fathers. In houses, Mothers, along with children, prepare festive lunch and bake cakes or pies. People congratulate the grandfathers. Fathers and grandfathers, who are not alive, are remembered on this day and candles are lit up on graves.
In Estonia, Father’s Day is celebrated on second Sunday of November from 1992. On the eve of Father’s Day, thematic performances are performed in kindergartens and in schools – concerts for fathers. Children present self-made greetings and gifts (usually these are cut-out from papers and colored ties or motor vehicles) to fathers. Flags are hoisted on Father’s Day.
As of now, for many countries, Father’s Day is officially a new celebration but gradually, the Day is becoming common for across the nations and is acquiring its traditions. For example, it has already become a tradition to conduct cognitive performances within the framework of charitable free family festival “Father’s Day for all children” by the concerned authorities. On this day, children, along with fathers, can participate in various competitions and closely get acquainted with the male professions.
