For fat people, one of the factors why women get fat more than men do, is estrogen – this female hormone activates steatogenous enzymes. This is the reason behind accumulation of fat by female body during pubescence, pregnancy, hormone therapy & contraception etc. It is necessary to preserve reproductive function of normal gestation. Mother Nature knows what it is doing. Mother nature has provided similar mechanism to female organism. It is impossible to be a woman without having certain reserve stock of fat in the body. Human estrogen not only stimulates steatogenous enzymes but also indicates exactly where to store fat. For fat people, this is the second significant difference between overweight men and overweight women: Estrogen directs fat mostly to buttocks & thighs. If a man is gaining excess weight, the fat is usually concentrated in the waist & neck due to he actions of male hormone testosterone, while in women, fat usually accumulates in hips & buttocks regions. That's why fat people are also shaped according to their gender. According to type of fat deposition in women, more often woman's figure is compared to "pear" while for men – the body fat distribution is around waist – thus fat male figure is compared to "apple".
Fat people in the news: Nicole Richie, who could be considered one of the fat people just some months ago, has now drastically lost weight and is under speculation that she has an eating disorder, acknowledges she is "too thin" and is getting treatment to add pounds, in an interview in Vanity Fair.
"I know I'm too thin right now, not one of the fat people I used to be. Right now I wouldn't want any young girl looking at me and saying, 'That's what I want to look like,' " the 24-year-old "Simple Life" star tells the magazine in its June issue, on newsstands Tuesday.
Richie, who has gained weight during a stint in rehab for heroin addiction, says she doesn't know how much she weighs today.
However, she says her eating habits are far from healthy: "I eat the worst foods -- salty cheese-and-grease kind of stuff fat people eat, but I am not gaining any weight these days."
"I get really stressed out, and I do lose my appetite, but I do force myself to eat. I tried to put the weight on my way, eating burritos, but that wasn't working, so I started seeing a nutritionist and a doctor," Richie tells the magazine.
Dr. Jeffery Wilkins, vice-chair of the department of psychiatry at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, who treats Richie, says doctors are "working on a systematic plan to get more calories in, and we're going to watch and see if she'll gain weight. She's unlikely to turn into one of the fat people, but she will become more attractive to herself and to the public with some extra pounds." |
