When it came to penalties in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Italy beat out France. Italy ended up beating out the French five to three. The turning point in penalty shootout happened when David Trezeguet who hit the bar with his kick but the kick of Fabio Grosso of Italy scored a goal. In the 111th minute of the game Zinedine Zidane was sent off the field with the red card after he had head butted Mario Materazzi. The Italians made fierce protests after which the referee consulted with a linesman. Zidane was sent off at this point. This was only the second shootout at a FIFA World Cup final. Brazil actually beat Italy on penalties after a zero to zero draw in 1994.
