Edouard Manet
Contest Directions: Past Sunday the artistic world celebrated the 179th birthday of Edouard Manet - the French artist who greatly contributed to impressionism and realism movement in art. Prior to becoming an artist, Manet twice failed the examination to join the navy, after which he decided to pursue a career in art, where his talents were quickly discovered. Manet studied under the academic painter Thomas Couture, a painter of large historical paintings. In his spare time he copied the old masters in the Louvre.
Photoshop any painting by Edouard Manet to include some modern elements in it. Think of product placements, celebrities, modern architecture, and even sci-fi features, etc. and show how Manet paintings would be different if he painted them in the modern days. Note: If you use any of Manet's paintings with "bare subjects" (e.g. "The Luncheon on the Grass" or "Olympia"), please cover them up with bikini before submitting.

        • Interesting work.
I'd use some filter or manually add brush-strokes to the face to make it look more like painting. Right now the lines and the main face area have uniform colors which while paintings usually have brushed look and many colors

This contest is fueled by the following news: The passion for old paintings compelled Manet to make numerous trips. He visited Dutch museums on numerous occasions, where he started admiring paintings by Frans Hals. In 1853, he made a trip to Italy, a traditional trip for French artists, where he visited Venice and Florence. The influence of painters of Early and High Renaissance on the young artist's paintings could be attributed to this period. Velazquez was one of the artists, who had the greatest influence on Manet. Perhaps, it was his later works, especially the famous bodegons, that had tremendous influence on the advancement of the Impressionism movement. The return trip to France took a lot of time - Manet travelled extensively in Central Europe, visiting museums in Dresden, Prague, Vienna and Munich. During the period 1856 - 58, Manet gained popularity as an upcoming artist, he was invited to various studios, where he met with the top circle of Parisian society. Manet strikes a warm relationship particularly with scandalous poet Charles Baudelaire. Manet opened a studio on Lavoisier street in partnership with Count Albert de Balleroy. Young Manet visited the Louvre everyday, making copies of famous paintings and always tried to get the approval of Couture: since his early years, Manet had the desire for recognition. Manet protested against the portraits, which were illuminated with sparklers, stars of fake jewellery flash on the forehead and arms are decorated with silver crosiers wand. Salon: In 1859, Manet decided that his artistic education was complete and made a decision to exhibit his works in Parisi Salon, the prestigious annual Paris exhibition. The artist had high hopes on the realistic (something similar to works of Baudelaire's) painting "The Absinthe Drinker". He was once again interested in the opinion of Couture and when he made recurrent negative remarks on Manet's creative works, Manet finally broke his ties with the teacher. Soon, another tragedy followed: Alexander, the boy who helped Manet in his studio and who also became a character in his painting "The Boy with cherries", committed suicide by hanging. Soon, the artist learned that the jury of studio rejected the painting "The Absinthe Drinker" (of all jury members, only Delacroix voted in favor of Manet and Couture, Manet's teacher, voted against him). The rejection of his paintings by the studio was completely justified: the theme of the painting itself was unusual – a realistic and unflattering portrait of a drunkard but not an allegory, created from the artist's imagination. There were no long-range plans and classical perspectives, which lent depth to pictures, which was used before Manet. The edge of the table, on which the bottle is shown, is not in line with the perspective. The shadows of the figure do not match its position. Manet did not use halftone, only a slight treatment of light and shade emphasizes the prominence of the figure. For sometime, a fiasco made Manet to think differently: he could find plots with difficulty and borrowed some elements openly from known artists. However, Edouard Manet could find a new plot for his future painting. Tuileries Garden, where Parisian bohemia assembled for walks and small conversations on weekends. Now, the artist firmly refused all advice from Couture, which allowed him to easily and naturally paint a collection of people. The thematic and technical novelty of the painting once again lead to surprise and confusion from close associates of Manet. Such types of scenes from nature were perceived as a painting, meant only for illustrations in magazines and reports. Manet set aside the academic technique of the "careful finishing" of paintings, in which the importance was not given to whether the painting was seen from close up or from a distance. With such an approach, a portion of the canvas, which was seen from close by, appeared to be nothing but a magnified part of a far off view. In "Concert in the Tuileries Garden", by contrast, viewed at close range, characters appear to be almost abstract forms. This similarity is achieved only when the painting is viewed from a certain distance. In spite of careful selection, in 1861, both paintings of Manet ("Portrait of Mr & Mrs Auguste Manet" & "The Spanish Singer") were accepted by the jury of studio, and the latter even won an award. The audience also responded very well to the creative works of the young artist. The recognition of the studio brought fame and money to the artist, but the recognition of his father was no less important for Manet since his father, even before the studio, proudly showed the paintings, depicting elderly Manet couple, to his guests.
