This year the whole world is celebrating the 200th birthday of American writer Edgar Allan Poe. Poe was one of the leaders of the American Romanticism and his most brilliant tales were filled with the macabre and mystery. Most Poe fans suggest that if you only want to read one story by Poe, read “Loss of Breath.” My personal favorite of Poe's is "Gold Bug".
To celebrate the 200th birthday of Edgar Allan Poe, give anything (movies, paintings, posters) a Poe-inspired theme (from any of his stories), or make an illustration to any of the Poe's stories.

| | Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 - October, 7, 1849) was an American writer, poet, literary critic and editor and also a representative of American romanticism. He received huge popularity for “somber” detective stories. He was one of the first American writers, who created his works in the form of short stories and he was also considered as the founder of the detective fantasy genre in literature. His creativity promoted the occurrence of the science fiction genre. Edgar Poe was the first among known American writers who tried to earn a livelihood only through his literary skills. As a result of this, he had to face difficulties with respect to finances and also in his career.
Biography:
Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, USA. His parents, actors of in a wandering troupe, died when Edgar was only two years old. The mother of Edgar, Elizabeth Arnold Poe was an Englishwoman and the father of Edgar, David Poe was an American of Irish descent. John Allan, a well-to-do merchant adopted Edgar Poe.
Literary creativity:
Edgar Poe started his literary works with poetry by publishing the book of poems “Tamerlane and other poems” in Boston in 1827. As a prose-writer, Edgar Poe released his book “A manuscript found in a bottle” in 1833.
The creative work of Edgar Poe was influenced by romanticism, already finding its way into the West. “Dark fantasy, which gradually disappeared from European literature, once again flashed in an original way and brightly in the “terrible stories” of Poe – the epilogue of romanticism” (Friche). English and German romanticists, especially Hoffmann (without reason Poe did not take great interest in German literature and idealistic philosophy) had a strong influence on the creative works of Edgar Poe; disastrous – gloomy shades of Hoffman’s imagination were inherent to Poe, though he declared: “The horror of my stories are not from Germany but from my heart”. Hoffmann's words: “Life is a terrible nightmare, which follows us until it throws us into the arms of death” express the basic idea of the “terrible stories” of Poe, the idea, which along with the original style of its expression was already born in the first stories of Poe and only intensified, worked-up with huge skill in his further art creations.
Stephane Mallarme spoke on behalf of the younger generation of symbolists – Edgar Poe was their recognized leader. Symbolists, without hesitation, declared Poe as their forerunner, for example, the poem “Annabel Lee”.
“The unknown American” was released by Charles Baudelaire in 1852. Pay attention to the date – it explains more in the Baudelaire interpretations and in the interests of the author “Flowers of Evil” to the work “The Raven”. The June revolution of 1848 came to an end (Baudelaire was on “Barricades”) and the Bonapartist coup took place. For Baudelaire, the world was painted in gloomy and dim shades. By reading Poe, he was astonished by the deep affinity unfolding before him, the perception of the world by his own tragic experiences. For some years he devoted himself to the translation and study of the creative works of the new idol. His big article, written in 1856, played a significant role in the future literary destiny of Edgar Poe.
Edgar Poe remained in the history of poetry and as an artist, considering the idea to be superficial, as if the genius is incompatible with skill, acquired by persistence and a perfectly realized work, so as a result, the most thin feeling, the most imperceptible shade of an idea appears to be accessible to the semantic embodiment, which is based on precise calculation. The inspired mathematics of Poe pushed his literary contemporaries, they noticed only geometry, but did not find true feeling in his verses, which would have given completeness and a high sense to the creative work. The most significant lifetime book of Poe was “The Raven and other poems”. Reviewing it, poet James Russell Lowell concludes that the author has excellently abated a heap of stones, which would be sufficient for an impressive pyramid, but all of them remained in front of the area, meant for future construction, which did not even have a foundation.
