| | DUCKS: Group of species of waterfowls with webbed legs, belonging to Anatidae family, which also includes goose and swans. Ducks differ from other representatives of family comparatively by small sizes, short legs and neck, somewhat flattened trunk and with usually dissimilar plumage color in males and females. As in the case of geese, swans and also flamingos, ducks also have lateral tooth-like crests along the beak from inner side - plates - for filtering food particles from mud and water. Numerous types of ducks are found in freshwater basins and seas all over the world.
Wild Ducks:
American union of ornithologists attribute these wild ducks to two subfamilies and six tribes (tribe - taxon of a rank below the subfamily but above the genus). Anserinae, goose subfamily, includes one their tribes - wood or whistling ducks (Dendrocygnini) are the nearest to geese. Remaining types constitute duck subfamily of Anatinae, which includes five tribes: Tadornini (common shelducks), Cairinini (Muscovy ducks and their nearest relatives), Anatini (actual or river ducks ), Aythyini (netta), Mergini (Eiders, Velvet ducks, Mergansers and taxons, which are close to them). Especially well-known Anatini, since these ducks feed on surface and are found mainly in fresh water basins. They prey forage in shallow waters, inserting the head and front portion of body into waters but the rear portion of body is left over the waters. Common mallard, American black mallard, grey duck, Northern pintail, teals, American and common wigeons, Northern Shoveler, wood ducks and mandarin ducks belong to this tribe. Aythyini, i.e. Netta, are also very popular, which are found in fresh and salty waters; for the sake of food or protecting themselves from predators, they dive and swim underwater. American, long-nosed and common red-crested pochards, greater scaups and some other types belong to this tribe.
Grey Duck:
Gadwall (Anas strepera) are found in South-West of Canada and in north of USA and it spends winters in southern states and major parts of Mexico. Male grey duck has well-proportioned body mainly grey in color with white belly, black uropygium and white spots on rear corner of wing. Female is brownish, motley in color. This is a herbivorous bird, which is popular object for sports hunting.
Domestic ducks:
It is assumed that all the species of domesticated ducks have originated either from mallard or from muscovy ducks. Mallard was domesticated in Europe around 1 AD and muscovy duck - in South America, probably shortly before 16th century
Majority of modern breeds were obtained from these kinds by selection and crossbreeding, whereas Rouen ducks and Indian runner duck preserved color of wild mallard.
Breeds and classes:
American poultry-farm association established standards for 12 breeds of ducks, which are divided into three classes. White Pekin, Aylesbury, Muscovy, Rouen, Cayuga, Buff and Swedish Blue ducks belong to meat producing class; Indian runner and khaki-Campbell belong to egg-laying class; call, white Crested and black east Indian runner ducks belong to decorative class of ducks.
White Pekin Duck:
Important breed in USA in terms of commercial value. These are covered with white plumage, stocky, meaty, sluggish but quickly growing birds. Breed is brought from China but has been adapted to economic needs of American food-processing industry. Its egg production is increased by more than two-fold and usage efficiency of birds meat remains competition-free among domestic ducks.
Duck breeding:
Duck breeding is profitable in any size economy. Perches or nests are not required for them, shelter and thatched litters are sufficient for them. Ducks eat vegetables, grains, kitchen waste products - practically any food, available in the farms and the ducks feels comfortable on pastures. These birds can be bred even in the absence of water body for swimming, though its availability increases their reproduction efficiency.
Eggs:
Egg-laying duck breeds such as Indian Runner or khaki Campbell lay eggs year-round. Duck eggs are bigger than the chicken eggs; on an average, dozen duck eggs weigh 0.8 - 0.9 kgs. Duck eggs are used in bread making and are eaten in England.
Meat:
In USA, ducks are reared predominantly for meat. Ducklings are endurable and quickly grow. Pekin duck attain a weight of upto 2.4 - 2.7 kgs approximately within 12 weeks; "green ducklings" are usually forgotten.
Feathers:
Duck feathers are used packing material but only eiderdown has significance in this regard.
Feed:
Vegetative forages form the main ration for majority of ducks, however, animal food is also predominant in many cases.
Some species are excellent divers, finding itself forage at the bottom of water bodies: thus, sea ducks (Mergini) and steamer ducks (Tachyeres) catch sea shellfish and Crustacea. Diving ducks (Aythyini) can also perfectly immerse completely under water or partially, leaving only a tail on surface - thus, they catch alga, zooplankton, insects, shellfish and worms. Mergansers feed on sea fish and thus they behave most effectively underwater when compared to other ducks, performing unexpected maneuvers.
Often ducks feed at night times.
Duck diseases:
When compared, ducks suffer much less from diseases such as infections than most other animals. One of the main problems is "new duck syndrome", but its outbreak can be suppressed with the help of terramycin antibiotic. Ducklings are susceptible to acute virus hepatitis (liver infection), leading high death rate, but it is possible to fight it through immunization. |
