Dr Seuss Books

Contest Directions:  Theodor Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, would have turned 105 this Monday. Dr. Seuss is famous by his Children's books (he wrote about 60 of them) that have been enjoyed by beginner readers and families for several generations. Seuss also drew over 400 political cartoons for a New York daily newspaper. He also joined US army during World War II where he was the leader of the animation department. Many FNers are big fans of Dr. Seuss books. Here's a short poem written by thekillerbee, who suggested this contest:
I would like to suggest a contest if I could,
To honor a great man, Theodor Seuss Geisel if you would.
Better known to the world as the amazing Dr. Seuss,
Letting young imaginations run about on the loose.
Today marks his birthday, number 105 to be exact.
He created many great characters in fact.
You know of the cat, thing one and thing two,
Please don't forget Horton, you remember he heard a who.
So gather 'round and a story you'll hear,
Of a grinch who turned a dog into a reindeer.
Classic tales cultivating our youth,
A legend forever, and you know that's the truth!

This contest is fueled by the following news:
Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) (born March 2, 1904, Springfield, USA – died September 21, 1991) was an American writer and cartoonist. Biography: Theodor Geisel was born in the family of a German brewer. His grandfather waited for many years to once again head the family business. However, the day he retired, America introduced the dry rule. Without work, the father of Theodor got employment in the local zoo. Subsequently, he became its director and also the director of the national park. The childhood of the writer was spent close to the zoo and he used to spend entire days drawing the zoo’s inhabitants - various animals, transforming them beyond recognition. The mother of the writer, whose maiden name was “Seuss” - selected by Theodor Geisel as pen name, supported her son in his work. She allowed young Тhео to draw freakish animals on walls of the attic and praised his drawings. The school’s drawing teacher, honestly, did not share the views of the writer’s mother. During one of the lessons, he predicted that Geisel would never learn to draw “normally”. Subsequently, Dr. Seuss completed American college and went on to study at Oxford. In his diaries, Theodor Geisel describes his stay at the university as a senseless pastime, averting students from culture. Theodor Geisel, as a true American, got sick of the stiffness of Oxford and the blind worshipping of senseless fetishes. Having studied hardly for more than a year, Geisel leaves Oxford and travels across Europe and starts working as a political cartoonist and advertisement artist on his return to America. However, Theodor Geisel met his future wife Helen in Oxford. Helen was his coauthor and his trustworthy (loyal) friend. Artist: Many cartoon films were made according to the adaptation of characters by Dr. Seuss. The cartoon film “The Cat in the Hat” was made with the participation of Dr.Seuss. 20th Century Fox made a cartoon film on the motifs of the fairy tale of Dr. Seuss “Horton hears a Who”, which was dubbed and released in Russia on March 13, 2008 under the name “Horton”. Writer of children’s books: Already becoming fashionable and a highly paid author, Seuss authored his first book: “And to Think that I Saw It on Mulberry Street”. He offered it to 28 publishing houses and everywhere it was refused. Random House was the only publishing house which accepted to publish the book. The history of “And to Think that I Saw It on Mulberry Street”, the drawings of which were made by the author tasted big success and Dr.Seuss authored 40 more books. Musicals, radio performances and cartoon films were made based on the books of Dr.Seuss. A big park exists in America, which was made according to the characters of his drawings. At the moment, Dr.Seuss is the most saleable children's writer in English (for small children, “Harry Potter” - is other age group). The best-selling book of Dr.Seuss is “Green Eggs & Ham”, but “The Cat in the Hat” is a real icon of American culture. Dr.Seuss authored the book “the Cat in the Hat” using only 220 words, which were given to him by the publisher. It was assumed that these were the 220 words which children of certain age should know. The series of “The Cat in the Hat” books were published for small children, successfully displacing the books about “Dick and Jane”, which filled all the racks of shops in the 1930's and 1950s. Dr.Seuss offered games to children instead of instructions, mad phantasmagoria instead of dry descriptions of the accurate mode of life, surrealistic adventures instead of viscous and senseless narration. Also, books of Dr.Seuss were ridiculous and bright. Having won over the hearts of American children in the middle of the century, Dr.Seuss continues to be popular. His books are used to make children read and his book “Oh, The Places you’ll Go!” is gifted to almost each child at their school-leaving party.
