This contest is fueled by the following news: A doggy love motel, complete with a heart shaped mirror on the ceiling and a headboard resembling a doggy bone, recently has opened for pooches in love in Brazil, in San Paulo which is South America's largest city. The director of the doggy love motel said that it is modeled after the establishments that rent rooms by the hour to human couples. The director of Gang dos Bichos, or Gang of Animals, maintains that it is the only establishment of its kind in the world at the present time. Dogs in Military: History of using the dogs in wars is very rich and dates back to ancient times. According to historical documents, people started using the dogs in warfare around 6000 yrs back. In ancient Rome, dogs were specially trained for taking their services in army. Light armed troops along with trained dogs were the first ones to take the battlefield & their task was to stop the counter-attack of enemy's infantry or cavalry & hold the positions till the arrival of heavily armed legionaries. Bas-relief, discovered during the excavations of Herculaneum, which depicts a armored dog and barbed collar, protecting the Roman post & fighting dogs, participating in the battle, on Column of Marcus Aurelius, testify this. Might of heavy mastiffs was used by the Persian king Cambyses during the conquest of Egypt in 525 BC. After the defeat of Persian army, led by King Xerxes about V BC, mastiffs were taken as spoils of war by Greeks & were used for reconnaissance, against spies and performing the guard service. Even the Alexander the Great used the warfare dogs in the battlefield. In Assyria, dogs were used as military dogs more than 2500 years ago. Armors, protecting the head, chest and back from arrows, darts, spears, impacts of clubs and swords were manufactured for the dogs. It is known from cuneiform tablets that, people of Nineveh and Nimrod provinces in Mesopotamia, engaged in breeding of warfare dogs were exempted from paying taxes to state. To this day, images of Assyrian war dogs can be found on the walls of ancient Sumerian & Assyrian churches. War dogs were used by Chaldeans (IX BC) during the invasion of Southern Mesopotamia & before the attack, dogs were made to wear heavy metallic collars with sharp curved knives. 4000 dogs rendered support to the soldiers in Spanish army against French troops at the Battle of Valencia. Strong evil greyhounds accompanied Vikings in many campaigns. During the World War II, dogs were used as scouts, sentries, signalers, shifted dispatches across the front line, laid telephone cables, determined location of mines, helped in delivering ammunition to soldiers, who were surrounded and worked as attendants. Attendant dogs crawled on their bellies upto wounded soldiers with medical kit & waited till the soldier addressed to his wound. Dogs can precisely distinguish between the living and dead man & dogs licked many wounded soldiers, who were in unconsciousness state, to wake them up. Even today, dogs perform military service efficiently in different parts of the globe. Grateful Englishmen had installed a memorial in the honor of animals, which died in the human wars, with an inscription "They had no choice" in the center of London. Guard and search dogs: In 20th century, military dog training departments have formulated a training course, which is called guard service. During the training period, they prepare the dogs to be search (police dogs), watch dogs, guard dogs (bodyguards) as well as escort dogs. Service breed is used in professional dog breeding. It includes: • fetch strange things - identify a man according to smell of his things; • Guard the item or territory; • Detention by guarding and escorting; • Search the area for item or human; Rat Catchers: In nature, dogs are natural enemies of rats. Man has identified this beneficial quality long ago and started using the dogs in biological disinfection. Further, man improved natural rat hunting talent of dogs and introduced tens of various rat catching breeds. For example, an Andalusian tavern Piper was bred from various terriers and rat catching dogs of unknown breeds. Predominantly white colored dogs with tiny black marks with reddish spots were selected for breeding; light color was necessary so that it was convenient to see the dog in dark premises, in which it catches rats (in ship holds, warehouses, trading ports, taverns, stables and tanneries).
