This contest is fueled by the following news: Dog life span: Empirically, longevity of mammals increases with increase in the size of brain (as a result, it also increases with increase in weight of body) and decreases with increase in speed of metabolism. In case of dog breeds, typical dependence is disturbed. Large-sized dog breeds, though attain sexual maturity more slowly, live much less, difference can be 2 times between the largest and smallest breeds. "Bluey", a cattle-dog from Australia entered the Guinness Book of World Records as "Oldest dog" in the world (29 yrs 5 months). It grazed the cattle and sheep for about 20 yrs. It was owned by Les Hall from Rochester, Victoria, Australia. Puppies: Neonatal period: Neonatal period begins immediately after the birth and upto 10 - 12 days. Puppy is totally dependent on mother and grows quickly. Transition period (13-20 days): During this period, important physical changes take place in the growth of puppy. Puppy opens its eyes only on the 13th day. Pupils of puppies already start reacting to the light but the retina is still not developed and hence, the puppy cannot see the objects and their movement until about 21 days. Puppy starts creeping backwards as well as forward and a few days later, it starts to walk in staggering gait, swaying from side to side & falling very often. First teeth appear around the 20th day and it starts biting and chewing. Later period (21 - 28 days): This is the first week, in which the puppy starts using the vision and hearing senses. These perceiving changes take place very quickly within 24hrs in majority of puppies and during this period, the puppy requires a stable and steady environment. If the puppies are separated during this period from its mother, then the separation can have an impact on its further physiological development. Socialization period with dogs (21-49 days): This is socialization period for puppies with dogs, when the puppy learns to use species-specific behavior, allowing to communicate with other dogs. So as to develop these features, in-built in its genes, the puppy is to be kept in the kennel along with mother and littermates. This is the reason why the puppies are separated from mother not earlier than 30 - 40 days or even later. Socialization period with man (7-12 weeks): Attachment towards man develops during this period. Fearing period (8 - 12 weeks): During this period, state of mind is especially sensitive to actions, causing fear and pain. Stress, experienced by the dogs during this period, can lead to unpleasant consequences and can even complicate the future life of dogs. During this age, if the dogs are not made to meet with other dogs, it will never be sufficiently communicative and the same case even with the man. Seniority classification period (13-16 weeks): At this age, for the first time, puppy starts to figure out who is the "leader of pack". If it tries to bite, even while playing, then it is the its first timid attempt to dominate. Juvenile period: Juvenile period onsets from 13-26 day when the puppies start playing. With the beginning of playing stage, motor activity of puppy undergoes profound transformation, distant receptors start functioning & begins full communication of it with mother and brothers. Considerable changes in motor activity of young puppy takes place in the juvenile ontogenesis period & puppies start playing actively with objects (manipulation games). Puppies touch, grab and bite everything they come across, drag everything they can in teeth from place to place, swing small objects, holding them in its mouth & shaking its head sideways. Object manipulation play is particularly stimulated by appearance of new or little-known objects. Joint games with congeners form group & social behavior of dogs & are unique only to social animal types. Joint games are played predominantly without items. If the puppies are deprived of playing joint games, then sphere of communication would be significantly infringed or even distorted in adult condition & this applies to many animals. Playing activity is retained in dogs throughout the life.
