The theft and removal of a crocodile warning sign that had been posted at the Glen Isla landing near Proserpine has sparked fears regarding public safety. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service ranger Peter Sykes said that the familar yellow warning signs were an important part of the agency's "croc-wise" public awareness campaign -- a campaign designed to keep people safe when using the waterways for recreational purposes. Shortly after the sign disappeared, tourists entered the river for a swim, having no idea that crocodiles were to be found nearby. The theft of the sign is described as a selfish and dangerous act. The signs are specially made and cannot be replaced easily. |
