New York city has several public clocks which need regular winding to be kept on time. Clock Tower Building, City Hall, and other historical buildings all have old mechanical clocks, which have been wound for decades by Marvin Schneider, the city's official clock-watcher. He says winding these clocks feels like being in an entirely different century, plus there's a fabulous view on the city from the top.

This contest is fueled by the following news: Electronic clocks are based on counting the oscillation periods from
stable quartz generator with the help of divisor meters and displaying
the readings on electronic display: Electro-luminescent vacuum
display, light emitting diode or LCD through decoders. First
electronic clocks were made on separate lamps and then transistors and
integrated circuits. Then the electronic wrist watches were also
manufactured, which had LED display. Electronic wrist watches could
indicate the time but for a shorter period since the LEDs consumed too
much power. Then, properties of liquid crystals were used under the
influence of electric field and pass light with unidirectional
polarization. Light was supplied from external source between two
polarizers and the light is absorbed by the system polarizer – liquid
crystal – polarizer – reflector. If the electrical field is present,
then the light becomes dark and display element is formed. As a result
of this, energy consumption was reduced significantly and battery
replacement takes place infrequently. As a rule, a micro controller is
in-built in contemporary electronic clocks and clocks are manufactured
with many service functions (alarms, melodies, calendars etc) but the
micro controller continues to count the oscillation periods of the
same quartz crystal. Electronic clocks are also available, which are
based on principle of frequency count of feeding circuit. In many
countries, very rigid requirements are applicable to stability of
frequency. During load fluctuations, frequency can vary and accuracy
of such clocks is not considered sufficient, even though, accuracy is
sufficient for many a people.
The Care of watches:
Your watches need special care, so that they serve you for a long time and give you satisfaction in using a watch. Mechanical watches - the usual mechanism, requiring lubrication, cleaning and adjustment of precision. It is recommended to do this once every 3-4 years in special service centers, listed in your watch's certificate. On exposing the body of the clock, every speck of dust can disrupt the accuracy of the watch and affect its longevity. The winding of the watches must be done after taking it off the arm. This helps to prevent uneven pressure on one of the most vulnerable components of the watches - the crown. The watch with a manual winding mechanism should be wound clockwise at the same time daily. Winding once a week is enough for watches with an automatic mechanism. If you are involved in strenuous sports, remove your watch so as to avoid the recoil force on the watch. How much a perfect shockproof mechanism is assured, there is always an extra load that a watch cannot sustain. If you are used to wearing expensive mechanical or designer watches, you should remove them while taking part in any sport! There are special sports watches with a strong dial and they are waterproof.
Quartz watches demand less care, but also need to be checked at the service center once every 4-5 years. The replacement of the batteries should not be delayed and an authorized dealer should be contacted before the battery expires to avoid damage to the watch. Changing the battery yourself is not recommended because after battery replacement, the watch must undergo some tests. To avoid damage to the calendar mechanism, you should not adjust the date between 2200 hrs and 2 o'clock in early morning, because at this time all the gears are moving automatically to change the date. Put the hour hand at the 6:00 position and then change the date. Most expensive Swiss-made watches have a durable sapphire crystal, which hardly gets scratched during regular use. However, precious stones, because of their high density, can easily spoil your watch and therefore you should store them separately, preferably in a special box given along with the watch. It is made of special soft materials, especially for your watch.
Broken or cracked glass should be replaced immediately, because the dust can get into the system and damage the watch. The use of a watch in a cold climate is not recommended: lubricating oils solidify, the mechanism works slowly in a retarded fashion and the axle journal gets damaged. Do not leave it on stone tables such as marble, as a sudden change in temperature can adversely affect some parts, especially on the spring and coil. Before going to bed, remove the watch to protect it from damage that may be caused due to uncontrolled movements during sleep. Everyone knows that during sleep, person sweats, which can lead to progressive damage to the case. If the watch is water resistant, you can wipe it with a mild detergent, and then dry it thoroughly. Do not rub the leather cleaners, as they can easily get destroyed. Watches with metal bracelets are suitable for people with an active lifestyle.
It is necessary to check a watch for leaks every 2-3 years and if necessary, change its pads. If you are a music fan, keep your watch away from sound to avoid the magnetization of the parts of the watch. To conclude, I repeat: for your expensive watch, there are special brand stores mentioned in the certificate, do not get them checked in the first shop encountered! Follow all instructions and the watch will serve you for decades.
