At the end of June, an innovative laser treatment that claims to be able to remove pockets of fat over the course of a lunch hour will be introduced in the U.K. The process, which is called SmartLipo, purportedly is faster and less invasive that normal liposuction. The so-called “lipolytic laser” removes unattractive lumps of fat in such places as on a person's thighs and rearend as well as double chins and proverbial batwings that can be found on the upper arm. Six cosmetic surgery clinics in the U.K. have announced that they plan to use the procedure when it is introduced. Indeed, the distributor of SmartLipo indicates that it feels nearly every clinic will want the laser product. The product is being marketed that it allows for the entire process to be completed over the course of a lunch hour. In point of fact, some research has suggested that only a small amount of fat actually can be removed during each visit. Cosmetic surgery is very popular in the U.K., having increased 35% in the past year alone, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. At this time, breast implants remain the most popular surgical procedure, with 5,655 breast enlargements last year. Males are also taking to plastic surgery, with 11% of all procedures being done on men in 2005 which is up from 3% in 2004.
