| At the request of the Associated Press, experts have considered and reviewed the so-called lower sugar versions of six major brands of sugar sweetened cereal products. They concluded that there is no significant nutritional advantage to the lower sugar versions of the products. Scientists at five universities did find that while the cereals did have less sugar, the calories, fat and other nutrients were almost identical to the higher sugar content versions of the cereals. The reason is the cereal makers replaced the sugar in the products with refined carbohydrates to maintain the crunch. In the end, some people considering the study believe that parents may forgo buying these lower sugar products for their children because there is no significant nutritional difference in the products. |
