| Economists report that more than 1 billion people on the planet are living on less than $2 a day. Cell phones and Internet access is out of their reach. But, economists note that phone service may help bring the world's poorest people to a better position. They believe that wireless phones are the best bet because landlines are faulty and even nonexistence in some areas of the world. Efforts to make such phones more widely available in poorer parts of the world have become major priorities for phone companies.
Cell Phone safety issues:
Unfortunately, reliable scientific research relating to possible harm due to the use of mobile phones is not carried out. Heating, connected with the working of the radio transponder is much less than heating by the Sun. But, the cornea of an eye does not possess a thermo-regulation mechanism; therefore, some studies speak about the danger of cataracts during the long use of mobile phones. In 2005, Chinese researchers have come to a conclusion that mobile phone radiation leads to DNA damage.
In some countries, the norms for limiting the use of devices with high radiation levels exist.
The intensity of the field, created by base stations, is negligibly small when compared to the field, created by terminals. The transmitter capacity of a base station does not exceed 300 watts (for stations, established in an open field). Whereas in 3G networks, the capacity is even less than in 2G networks. It is interesting that, the increase in density of base stations leads to a reduction of intensity of the field (firstly, since the station is to serve s smaller area, the capacity of the transmitter is preset at a smaller mark; secondly, the directional antennas are established in densely populated areas). Sole persons, for whom the base stations are really harmful, are the personnel, serving the base stations. Disconnecting the equipment is very rare and cases exist, when the repairman has to work on the working antenna.
Cordless phones (consisting of a radio tube and base module, connected to a city telephone network) have much smaller radiation levels (about 100 times) than cellular phones as the radius of their action is limited to tens of meters. Therefore, cordless phones are safer.
Talking on the phone while driving leads to an increased risk of accidents. In many countries, it is banned to talk on mobile phone while driving. The instruction manuals to mobile phones recommend talking through a headset or through a complete set of loud-speakers or move on to the side of road and only then answer a call. But even with these devices, the driver, all the same, gets distracted and the risk to meet with an accident increases by four times (in comparison with those, who do not converse on the phone while driving).
As the sizes of mobile phones are constantly decreasing and power consumption increasing, the capacity of the storage battery also increases. Sometimes, cases of an explosion of the storage batteries are encountered. Such cases are very rare though and are usually fake storage batteries, which do not have the certification of the manufacturer.
Mobile phone radiation can lead to improper functioning of complex medical equipment; therefore, it is not worth it to use a mobile phone in hospitals. Manufacturers of mobile phones recommend that the people, who use cardio simulators, should carry phones on the side opposite to the cardio simulator (for example if it put on the left side, then the phone should be held on the right side).
People, using hearing aids, should necessarily test the phone before buying it since some models create interference for hearing aids and the subscriber hears extraneous noises (peep, hum etc.). A similar effect is observed if the cellular phones are used near sound amplifying equipments.
While using cellular phones, it is necessary to consider its "espionage" functions: the listening of conversations and determining the location of a phone. All phone conversations are recorded by the operators and provided upon request to law enforcement bodies. Without a storage battery, the cell phone continues to accomplish some functions (for example, the functioning of the clock). It is possible, thanks to the presence of built-in cells in the phone.
In 2007, Swedish scientists came to a conclusion according to the results of 11 studies, that the use of a cell phone for 10 years increases the occurrence possibility of tumors of the acoustic nerve twofold. In this case, it is noted that children are more prone since they have thin bone tissues compared to adults. But, the head of the research group Mr. Kjell Mild stated that, it is too early to come to final conclusions about the harm done by radio waves on a human being and stated that longer research needs to be carried out.
