This contest is fueled by the following news:
A painting of George Bush, done in cartoon style, has been removed from the City Museum of Washington. The picture is called "Man of Leisure, King George" and does adopt the pose that was used in the famous Impressionist painting by Edouard Manet called Olympia. Olympia scandalized Paris in 1863 ... but, it now is displayed at the Gare d-Orsay Museum in Paris. The latest incarnation of the work featuring Bush shows the president reclining on a chaise lounge. Escher's Artistic Design: During his entire lifetime, Escher created a lot of design work on orders from various organizations. The biggest (length 48 m) is "Metamorphosis III”, made in 1968 (open to the public since February 20, 1969), which was created for the Royal Mail of The Netherlands (PTT) and consists of a combination of various motifs and colors (in fact, it is a much larger version of the 1939 "Metamorphosis II”). For a long time, it hung in The Hague’s post office on Kerkplein square, but on 17 January, 2008, in connection with the shifting of the post office, it was moved to Schiphol airport, and now hangs in one of the departure halls. Among other things, Escher also completed wrapping paper designs for several companies including the large network of Netherlands stores “De Bijenkorf”, postage stamps, banknotes, bookplates for his friends, plafonds for a main building of Philips in Eindhoven, three columns for a school in The Hague and a relief for other schools, also located in The Hague. Most of these projects were incomplete. Legacy: In 1968, four years before his death, Escher founded a foundation “The M. C. Escher Foundation” in order "to preserve his legacy ". The M. C. Escher Foundation continues to organize exhibitions of works by the artist and releases books and films on him and his works. However, the foundation did not inherit his copyrights. The M. C. Escher Company B. V acts as the owner of the copyright acts. This foundation manages all copyrights on the works of Escher, including all images and text both oral as well as written. Despite the fact that it is based in The Netherlands, The M. C. Escher Company B. V. has been very active in addressing the copyright violations in U.S. In particular, the foundation has recently won a case against an American trading firm “Rock Walker”. In The Hague, the Escher Museum was opened in the former Royal Palace, which was earlier used as exhibition hall (Het Paleis) in 2002. M.C. Escher’s most famous graphic works are displayed in the Escher Museum. A memorial plaque hangs on the wall of a guesthouse in Ravello, where Escher stayed and where he, in particular, met his future wife. Interesting facts: Escher was a lefty. An asteroid, which was found in 1985, was named “Escher”. The image of the painting "Relativity" is regularly used in other artistic works: it was shown in one of the rooms of Goblin City in the film "Labyrinth", the characters of the cartoon "Futurama", while searching for an apartment in the series “I, Roommate” see the "Escher” house, the image is present in the video clip by the “Red Hot Chili Peppers” in the song “Otherside”. In the song “White & Nerdy", Weird AL Yankovic parodies the image of the Nerd, in the line “MC Escher that's my favorite MC” in the song.
