The effort is designed to improve the public image and confidence of the national police force. Mike Arroyo's campaign was dubbed A New Smile for the Toothless and focused on market vendors in Manila but also the police force. Police officers in Manila earn as little as $157 per month. A senior police officer who has been on the force for twenty years, Omar Taribul, said he had endured years of humiliation after losing his teeth in a gun fight with communist rebelt back in 1994. He said he can now smile because he has a brand new set of teeth.
