A knockout fight for fighting the WBC champion was organized in May 1995 between Lewis and Lionel Butler. Butler had a huge amount of losses for a contender, however he was able to give a good winning streak and won the right to participate in the elimination round. Lewis knocked out the opponent in the 5th round. Having won over the eliminator, Lewis could not meet the champion, as by that time, McCall has already lost to Frank Bruno, who was defeated by Lewis. Bruno then lost to Mike Tyson. Tyson was stripped of the title and the title belt was declared vacant in 1996.
In October 1995, Lewis knocked out Tommy Morrison in the sixth round.
A fight was organized between Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis in June 2002. Lewis dominated the entire fight. In the middle of the 8th round, Lewis connected to Tyson's jaw with a right uppercut. Tyson squatted down. The referee counted the knockdown. Towards the end of the round, Lewis put Tyson down on canvas with a right clinch. On counting up to 10, Tyson managed to get up on only one knee. The referee declared it a knockout. This knockout has become the "knockout of the Year" according to the magazine "The Ring".
In June 2003, Lewis was supposed to fight Kirk Johnson. Just weeks before the fight, Johnson injured himself during a training session. A replacement to Kirk Johnson was quickly found in Ukrainian Vitali Klitschko. In the first round, the boxers were clearly sizing each other, but from the second round, Vitali suddenly began putting pressure on Lewis through an exchange of punches. In the third round, the Britain successfully hit Klitschko in his left eyebrow, making a serious cut on the eyebrow of the Ukrainian. But Vitali still continued to hang on by slightly pressing Lennox Lewis but it was evident, that it was not possible for him to continue further. By the sixth round, everybody noticed that both the heavyweights were exhausted. In this round, the boxers did not go for attack, but Vitali could stop the powerful uppercut of Lewis and slightly pushed him with sluggish hits. According to the judges, the sixth round ended in a draw. At the end of the sixth round, the referee stopped the bout due to a cut, which made the face of Vitali turn red. Lewis won by TKO, Klitschko, in turn, demanded a rematch.
Later, Lewis announced his retirement. Thus, Lennox Lewis retired from boxing as a WBC champion. |
