| Two Russians and one American -- all smiles and exuding confidence galore -- prepared for their first mission in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. This breaks a 30 year tradition that at least one crew member with prior experience pilots the spacecraft. Soyuz spacecraft actually are guided by an autopilot as they approach the space station and during the docking process. However, the crew is trained to operate the craft manually should there be some sort of computer failure or other problem. |
