| A bottle is a container for the long-term storage of liquids, usually a long vessel, mainly of a cylindrical shape and with a narrow throat, which is convenient for sealing the bottle with a stopper. It is predominantly manufactured from glass (often in a dark shade) and more recently, the bottles are manufactured from polymeric materials (usually from polyethylene). Bottles made from ceramic, metal and other materials are very rare.
Usually bottles are made in a standard size. Bottles with a capacity of 0.5 liters (two basic varieties: dairy bottles with a broad neck, sealed by foil and for other drinks, with a narrow neck) and 0.7 liters (for wine) are most commonly used. For champagne, bottles with a larger capacity and made from stronger glass are often used and for cognac, special flat bottles. The basic international size of wine bottles is 0.75 liters.
For technical, scientific and medical purposes, bottles are manufactured with scales, which allow in measuring the volume of the filled liquid accurately. For laboratory purposes, bottles are manufactured in various shapes, for example, a bottle with two necks.
The glass bottle is more expensive and therefore the drink, contained in the glass container is more expensive than the drink in a plastic container of similar volume. Among the advantages of glass, the drink is better stored in a glass bottle and hence the drink from glass bottle is” tastier".
Plastic bottle:
Plastic bottles are more popular amongst the capacities for filling aerated drinks as it is much cheaper to manufacture the plastic bottles (cost price). Such bottles, as a rule, have a larger volume with respect to glass bottles and much safer due to elasticity. Plastic bottles gained huge popularity in everyday life and can be used for various needs. The first plastic bottles by Pepsi appeared in the USA market in 1970. From 1973 onwards, bottles made from polyethylene (PET-BOTTLE) were used.
Plastic bottles find widespread use in housekeeping. In third world countries, where the usual European ware and capacities are rare, plastic capacities found substantial demand and in Ethiopia, used bottles are sold directly in the markets. Birdhouses, mouse traps, funnels and pots for seedlings are made from the bottles. Bottles are used for protecting the young rice sprouts. Bottles are suspended on fences to scare away the crows. In Kazakhstan, washstands are made from plastic bottles and in Indonesia, stabilizers for imparting stability to fishing boats. In Mongolia, bottles are burnt as offering to the spirits. The use of plastic bottles for alcoholic drinks is undesirable, as alcohol can influence an emission of harmful substances from plastic bottles.
The recycling of bottles
Bottles with notes put inside were used by rescued sailors for sending messages about ship-wrecks and presently, such bottles are used by scientists for studying sea currents.
Small bottles with nipples are used for feeding breastfed children.
Plastic bottles of the 0.5 liter capacity are used for smoking marijuana and derivatives, including hashish (for this purpose, an aperture of small diameter is made in the bottle and they place the hashish in the bottle, wait for its complete combustion and then, the cap is removed to inhale the smoke).
