| | With what the birds are to be fed?
Even during the winter, every kind of bird tries to find certain type of feed. The kinds of flock of visitor birds would depend on what you are going to put in the manger. Given below are the basic feeds which can be used as winter feed. Each type of feeds in the booklet is shown with a symbol in a red square. Similar symbols are given near the pictures of birds which spend winter in Moscow and the corresponding feed preferences.
Crushed cereals, millet, oatmeal, wheat:
Favorite feed amongst some birds are the seeds of various plants specially cereals. Sprinkling the crushed cereals or oatmeal into the manger you will attract to it the sparrows, goldfinches, greenfinches and other granivorous birds. One should not forget that pigeons too peck any grains with pleasure.
Sunflower seeds:
It is the most universal feed for winter birds. Various granivorous birds can eat them up, so are the tomtits, nutcrackers, woodpeckers etc. The large quantity of vegetable fats inside the sunflower seeds makes it an important source of energy in the conditions of winter colds.
Fat (suet), meat:
These products can also be used for winter feed for birds. The tomtits, nutcrackers, some other kinds of birds love them. But it is useful to remember that birds can prefer only unsalted fat or meat. As a rule, pieces of fat are put on a string which is hung on the tree branches or on bushes. The feed of fat or meat are needed to be arranged in such a way that it is not handy to crows, magpies, jackdaws and also cats and dogs.
Dried rowan berry and haw:
The berries – rowan berry and haw attract the most beautiful winter habitants of Moscow – bullfinches and waxwings. The fruits are to be stocked and dried before hand from autumn
Seeds of maple and ash:
Various types of maples and ashes are one of the most common trees of greeneries of Moscow. The seeds of these trees are known as samara. The bigger part fly off from the trees by autumn and are difficult to get by the birds. The samaras are collected in autumn and hung on the mangers. Bullfinches, waxwings and some other visitors of avian dining love them.
Cones, acorns, nuts:
The cones serve as the main winter ration of the woodpeckers and crossbills. Jays from autumn gather to store the acorns, hiding them in the secluded places. In winter the hidden food serve a great help. The stocked cones, nuts and acorns of autumn can be used by you to attract not only woodpeckers and jays to your manger but also squirrels.
Apart from the above listed feed almost all the birds can eat bread and bread crumbs. |
