This contest is fueled by the following news:
Beard is a hair, covering part at the bottom of human or some animal face. For human beings beard serves as one among the secondary sexual attributes. Alexander the great ordered his soldiers to shave the beard so that hostile soldiers could not pull their beards. In Roman Empire shaven face was an attribute of a civilized man and that distinguished the Romans from “savages”. Goats have beard (and such beard of a man called goats’ beard or French beard). Dogs of certain pedigrees have beard and they are called bearded one (including Irish wolf dog). History of fashion on facial hair covering demonstrates defining influence of social factors for a possibility to grow beard and permissible cuts of beard, and the society’s treatment of such beards. Documented history of Western European countries allows us to observe the process of alternation of man’s appearance. In late middle ages and early Renaissance (14-15 A.C.) a man’s ideal appearance should resemble a youth of any age. And men’s faces were clean shaven. In the next period (starting from 1500 to the end of the Renaissance (1620)) majority of men of all ages had rich beards and moustaches. From baroque era (1620A.C.) beard went out of vogue and approximately from 1680 onwards moustaches had vanished too, up to the middle of 19 century clean shaven man’s face had become fully dominant. After revolution of 1848, beard and mustache have again become popular phenomenon in Europe. From the second quarter of 20th century reverse process happened: shaven faces have become dominant on man’s facial appearance. Rotation of shaven faces and hairy faces man’s as a popular phenomenon of man’s fashion and preferences can be considered depending upon changes in the concept of ideal man at the one or other historical period. In the era of ideal man’s concept dominance, beard and moustache are always present because they are conceived as natural and most bright feature, symbols of the manliness. On the contrary, with the change in social perception of an ideal woman of man, beard is shaven and secondary sexual attribute in the form of hair on face is removed. Irrespective of profession and social status, prevailing trends are typical for the broad strata of the society. But there are always social strata which remain independent and continue the traditions of appearance.
