| This contest is fueled by the following news: |
| | A famous holiday April Fools Day is notable for the jokes and
practical pranks people play on each other on this day. Those who love
this holiday would make some arrangements to fool a family member,
friend, or a neighbor to make them believe in the prank, and do some
things in vain. The aim is to make them feel embarrassed and have a
good laugh.
However, since the holiday day is so well known people naturally prepare
themselves for being subjects April Fools Pranks and try to
resist them. As a custom, all fools practical jokes are played only
till the noon of April 1, and not after it.
The holiday is also widely popular on the Internet, where many
websites would post hoax information and news and deceive their
visitors on this calendar day. Even famous sites like Google made such
humorous statements on April 1 which looked real enough to be believable.
It's interesting to trace the origin of April 1 holiday. While the
theories about it abound, most historians agree that the holiday
origin has to do with the ancient celebrations of vernal equinox,
which started on the old New Year's Day, March 25, and ended on April
2.
One of the most accepted theories says that the holiday originated in
France, when the country switched from the old Julian calendar to the
new Gregorian calendar, and changed the New Year's Day to January 1.
Naturally, not all heard or remembered about the calendar switch and
many were still celebrating the beginning of a New Year on April 1,
thus making fools of themselves. This gave good reasons to fools'
friends and relatives to make practical jokes about them pretending to
celebrate together with the "fools" and even exchange gifts and
flowers.
Another name for the holiday is All Fools Day and it has been widely
described in the history, folklore and literature. "Nun's Priest's
Tale" written in 1400 takes place on March 32, which is April 1 and is
a story of two fools. |
