| | Although birds are not particularly known for being an intelligent species, the New Caledonian crow does have an instinctive ability to make and use tools. This is according to researchers who bred four crows in captivity and found that they were able to make tools from tiny twigs without ever being taught. The three males and one female crow were brought up in artificial nests and then moved into aviaries that contained a variety of twigs. In time, all of the birds learned to use twigs as tools to obtain food.
