Animal Watercrafts
Contest Directions: [ "A new aquatic vehicle, "bionic dolphin", that can take passengers beneath the surface of the water, revolve 360 degrees and stand upright like a dolphin, may be released as early as next year. The dolphin-resembling watercraft can travel 300 miles without refueling, and has a range of applications as entertainment aquatic vehicle, rescue watercraft, and aquatic taxi." ]
I love the dolphin vehicle concept, but servicing it may be a bitch, especially if it breaks down in the middle of the ocean:
- Hello, watercraft service? Yeah, we are at 1 19.554' S 109 30.190' W Pacific Ocean. We have an emergency - we have a flat flipper and are out of spares. Plus, tail is leaking some stinky stuff which attracts sharks. It looks like we got lost in the wrong neighborhood.
- Stay put. We'll be there within 3 days.
In this contest you are asked to photoshop above-water watercrafts or underwater watercrafts, which look like any aquatic animal. Your entries should look like aquatic vehicles rather than aquatic robots.

This contest is fueled by the following news: Thomas "Doc" Rowe has created a so-called bionic dolphin. The new watercraft is designed to take passengers under the surface of the water, can revolve around in a complete circle and can stand upright rather like a dolphin (hence, its name). Rowe believes that he will be able to get his watercraft at resorts during 2007. He believes that there will be a great deal of other uses for his bionic dolphin watercraft. He noted that researchers could use the watercraft. He also commented on the fact that the government of Bermuda has expressed an interest in the bionic dolphin watercraft for use as a water taxi. Roger Hagie, director of public affairs for personal watercraft maker Kawasaki Motors Corp, stated that Rowe's watercraft was an interesting concept. The bionic dolphin is powered by a 425 horse power Corvette engine. It can cruise on the surface of the water upwards to 55 miles per hour. It is constructed of materials that include Kevlar, which is found in bullet proof vests. It can withstand rough wind conditions of up to 200 miles per hour. The bionic dolphin still needs regulatory approvals before it can be sold. Getting approval is proving to be a problem because the bionic dolphin does not fit into any of the categories for water vessels. A custom built bionic dolphin watercraft does not come for a low cost. It sells for around $350,000. Rowe did note that once more significant production occurs, the price will fall to around $120,000 for a two seat bionic dolphin watercraft. Even so, that far exceeds the average of $9,500 that people in the United States spent on watercraft last year according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association.
