Being one of the most famous American entertainers, Andy left this world too early, on May 16, 1984 - he was just 35. Many fans believed Kaufman's death was just another one of his pranks, especially because shortly before his departure Andy said that he would fake his own death and come back 20 years later. On May 16, 2004, Kaufman's surviving friends and many fans threw a "Welcome Home Andy" party for him, which he did not attend.

This contest is fueled by the following news:
Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman (January 17, 1949 - May 16, 1984, Los Angeles) is an American showman, actor and revue artist. Though Andy was often called comedian, Kaufman never considered him to be a comedian. He refused to tell jokes or participate in comedies, at least in traditional manner. On the contrary, Kaufman considered him anti-comedian or absurd actor & called himself “actor, who dances & sings”. Andrew Kaufman died of lung cancer. Film “Man on the Moon” with Jim Carrey in the role of Andrew Kaufman was made in 1999 on the basis of life & career Andrew Kaufman. Biography: Puzzle from New York: Andy Kaufman was born on January 17, 1949 in New York. At one-year age, he liked to operate gramophone, upto which he reached from his playpen. According to mother, whatever music was played, the kid was on top of the world with happiness. Favorite game of five year old boy was to stand in front the wall facing it & “conduct” his own television show by imagining an audience before him. When he was twelve years old, he started to entertain children during parties & at fourteen, he was already paid for entertaining. Since he was eight years old, he adored to arrange a performance for his family. Sense of humor in the boy was so strange that very few people understood him. Father often argued with him because he considered “all these tricks” to be improper occupation for the child. After one of such arguments, father could not control himself & literally screamed: “My God, Andy! It seems to me that you try to prove, as if one plus one is not two!” Andy looked straight into his father’s eyes and answered: “not compulsorily”. His career quite quickly rose – Kaufman performed on Broadway, acted in film, took part in television shows and in 1979 he arranged a benefit performance in Carnegie Hall. Foreigner & Elvis: Foreigner is one of the first characters, which Andy played in public. Eventually, Foreigner character was bid goodbye – Andy used this character for performing the role of Latka Gravas in a comedy television serial “Taxi”. Far too many people knew this character. Kaufman decided to find something different – moreover, he did not wish to continue to work in “Taxi” & he did not like whatever is connected with the serial “Taxi”. He considered such serials to be silly enough and hated off-screen laughter, asserting that such laughter is for dead people (means that the recorded laughter is for people, who are already dead). Wrestling: He even managed to make a career for himself as professional wrestler. He portrayed the character of wrestler in his performances – he really entered the ring. Only one unusual point was present in his “sports career” . Andy Kaufman fought only with women. Tony Clifton is the most popular character of Andy. The character was most popular because, till the end of his life, Kaufman stated that Kaufman and Clifton – two absolutely different persons. Moreover, many believed, that Andy Kaufman and Tony Clifton – not the same person. And it was true in many respects. Death: Many could not believe that Andy Kaufman is really dying. There were cases when, having seen Kaufman on street, people approached him and told: “Well, guy, leave the joke about death - somehow it’s already too much”. People thought, that he once again performs. But this time, it was all real. Terrible cough, which began on Thanksgiving Day in 1983, was the first warning. Family and friends started to worry for Andy, doctors examined him; however, everything was ok & soon the cough was cured. But a month later, one again he suffered from terrible cough & this time round, the investigations revealed that Kaufman was suffering from lung cancer. Moreover, disease was already in developed stage when operation appeared impossible. Doctors predicted that Andy has less than three months of life, but he lived five months. Kaufman did not surrender till the end. He visited doctors & went on procedures - and even continued to work. In search of a miracle, he flew to Philippines to visit practitioner Jun Labo, who supposedly conducted operation only with bare hands without using any instruments. Andy almost ceased to sleep and if slept – only with open eyes. When he died (it happened in the evening of May 16, 1984), the nurse tried to close his eyes but she could not. Many people, having learnt about Kaufman’s death, continued to take it as a trick. Many did not even believe that Kaufman actually died even during his funeral. Moreover, some think, that Andy is alive till date. Simply he is hiding & it is necessary for the show.
