This contest is fueled by the following news: Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman (January 17, 1949 - May 16, 1984, Los Angeles) is an American showman, actor and revue artist. Though Andy was often called a comedian, Kaufman never considered himself to be a comedian. He refused to tell jokes or participate in comedies, at least in a traditional manner. On the contrary, Kaufman considered himself an anti-comedian or an absurd actor and called himself the "actor, who dances and sings". Andrew Kaufman died of lung cancer. The film "Man on the Moon" with Jim Carrey in the role of Andrew Kaufman was made in 1999 on the basis of the life and career of Andrew Kaufman. Biography: The puzzle from New York: Andy Kaufman was born on January 17, 1949 in New York. At one year of age, he liked to operate the gramophone, which he reached from his playpen. According to mother, whatever music was played, the kid was on top of the world with happiness. The favorite game of the five year old boy was to stand in front of the wall facing it and "conduct" his own television show by imagining an audience before him. When he was twelve years old, he started to entertain children during parties and at fourteen; he was already paid for entertaining. Since he was eight years old, he adored to arrange a performance for his family. The sense of humor in the boy was so strange that very few people understood him. His father often argued with him because he considered "all these tricks" to be an improper occupation for the child. After one such argument, his father could not control himself and literally screamed: "My God, Andy! It seems to me that you are trying to prove one plus one is not two!" Andy looked straight into his father's eyes and answered: "not always". His career quickly rose Kaufman performed on Broadway, acted in film, took part in television shows and in 1979 he arranged a benefit performance in Carnegie Hall. Foreigner and Elvis: The Foreigner is one of the first characters which Andy played in public. Eventually, the Foreigner character was bid goodbye Andy used this character for performing the role of Latka Gravas in the comedy television series "Taxi". Far too many people knew this character. Kaufman decided to find something different moreover, he did not wish to continue to work in "Taxi" and he did not like whatever was connected with the series "Taxi". He considered such serials to be silly and hated off-screen laughter, asserting that such laughter is for dead people (meaning that the recorded laughter is for people, who are already dead). Wrestling: He even managed to make a career for himself as a professional wrestler. He portrayed the character of a wrestler in his performances he really entered the ring. Only one unusual point was present in his "sports career". Andy Kaufman fought only with women. Tony Clifton is the most popular character of Andy. The character was most popular because, till the end of his life, Kaufman stated that Kaufman and Clifton were two absolutely different people. Moreover, many believed, that Andy Kaufman and Tony Clifton are not the same person. And that was true in many respects. Death: Many could not believe that Andy Kaufman was really dying. There were cases when, having seen Kaufman on the street, people approached him and said: "Well, guy, leave the joke about being dead - somehow it's already too much". People thought, that he once again was performing. But this time, it was all real. The terrible cough, which began on Thanksgiving Day in 1983, was the first warning. Family and friends started to worry for Andy, doctors examined him; however, everything was ok and soon the cough was cured. But a month later, one again he suffered from the terrible cough and this time round, the investigations revealed that Kaufman was suffering from lung cancer. Moreover, the disease was already in the developed stage when an operation appeared impossible. Doctors predicted that Andy had less than three months to live, but he lived five months. Kaufman did not surrender till the end. He visited doctors and went on procedures - and even continued to work. In search of a miracle, he flew to the Philippines to visit the practitioner Jun Labo, who supposedly conducted operations only with his bare hands without using any instruments. Andy almost ceased to sleep and if he slept only with open eyes. When he died (it happened in the evening of May 16, 1984), the nurse tried to close his eyes but she could not. Many people, having learnt about Kaufman's death, continued to take it as a trick. Many did not even believe that Kaufman actually died even during his funeral. Moreover, some think, that Andy is still alive. He is simply hiding and it is necessary for the show.
