This contest is fueled by the following news: While there are no strange fingers of Reese's Pieces to be found anywhere in National Geographic's "Extraterrestrial," the magazine makes it abundantly clear that Earth is not that special when it comes to the development of life. The television special points to two very different worlds, very different from Earth. Both of these worlds are teaming with life that astronomers believe can and will evolve if the right set of conditions exist. The scientists have used computer models and considered how life would interact with the environment to form a thriving ecosystem in the future. Seth Shostak, the senior astronomer for the SETI Institute, says that they are scanning the skies looking for intelligent life. They believe that there are worlds beyond our own with "a plan" to make aliens that make sense.
